New Delhi: The Union Cabinet on Wednesday cleared a fresh Bill to ban the practice of instant triple talaq, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar said.

Briefing media here this evening, Javadekar said, “ The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill 2019 will be introduced in the upcoming budget session of Parliament. It will replace the Muslim women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) 2nd ordinance 2019.”

The Bill will ensure gender equality and will empower the Muslim women, he added.

The new Bill proposes to declare the practice of instant Triple Talaq as void and illegal. It also makes an offence punishable with imprisonment upto 3 years and fine.

The original Bill was cleared by the Lok Sabha last year but has been stuck in the Rajya Sabha where the BJP-led national coalition NDA is in minority.
