Union Cabinet approves creation of 5,000 new PG seats and 5,023 MBBS seats

New Delhi: In order expand the medical education with the aim to provide better health services to the people, the Union Cabinet has approved a proposal of creating 5,000 new PG seats and 5,023 MBBS seats across the country.

While briefing the newsmen, Information & Broadcasting, Electronics & Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that the Union Cabinet which met under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has decided to expand the medical education with an expenditure of Rs 15,034 crore and create 5,000 new PG seats and 5,023 MBBS seats across the country. He informed that the investment has increased to Rs 1.5 Cr per seat.

Vaishnaw also informed that the existing government colleges and hospitals will be upgraded with the aim for the better use of hospitals.

Speaking about the growth in the medical infrastructure in last 11 years, the Union Minister said that there was 109% increase in medical colleges (from 387 in 2013-14 to 808 in 2025-26) and 141% increase in UG seats (1,23,700 seats in 2025-26) while 144% increase in PG seats (76,174 seats in 2025-26).

Apart from expanding the medical education, the Cabinet also has approved the following five proposals:

  • Railway: Bakhtiyarpur-Rajgir-Tilaiya Doubling: Rs 2,192 Cr
  • Highway: Four laning of Sahebganj – Bettiah section of NH-139W with an investment of Rs 3,822 Cr
  • Railways productivity linked bonus with an investment of Rs 1,866 Cr
  • Shipbuilding and maritime development reforms with an investment of Rs 69,725 Cr
  • CSIR scheme for Capacity Building and Human Resource Development with an investment of Rs 2,277 Cr
