Ukraine’s Foreign Minister apologises for tweet on Goddess Kali

Ukraine Foreign Minister took to social media to apologise for the contentious tweet of Goddess Kali over a blast fume.

The latest development came nearly two days after Ukraine’s defence ministry sparked massive online outrage in India. Ukraine offered its apologies on Tuesday for the contentious tweet that purportedly featured an image of Goddess Kali over a blast fume.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Emine Dzheppar took to social media to offer apologies for the country’s Defence Ministry and said, “We regret @DefenceU depicting #Hindu goddess #Kali in distorted manner. #Ukraine & its people respect unique #Indian culture & highly appreciate support. The depiction has already been removed. Ukraine is determined to further increase cooperation in spirit of mutual respect and friendship.”

Even though the tweet was deleted within hours, the Ukrainian minister said that Kyiv and its people respect Indian culture. He had visited the national capital earlier this month and asked for India’s help fighting the Russian war.

On April 30, a controversial tweet posted by the defence ministry of Ukraine showing a morphed photo of the Indian goddess Kali sparked a row in India.

Taking to its Twitter handle, the Ukraine Defence Ministry said, “Work of art,” while sharing the picture showing Goddess Kali having an upskirt moment similar to Hollywood actress Marilyn Monroe.

The tweet outraged netizens in India, who deemed it offensive and “Hinduphobic” and expressed their annoyance over the controversial tweet. Despite deleting the tweet, screenshots of the image went viral on social media, resulting in a massive backlash.
