Karur: Actor-turned-politician, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief  Vijay, after reaching out to the families of the Karur stampede victims via Whatsapp video calls has sought police permission to visit Karur and meet the bereaved families.

Vijay, in an email to the Tamil Nadu Director General of Police (DGP), mentioned that he wished to extend his condolences to the families of those killed in tragedy, in person.

On Tuesday, Vijay, interacting with the affected families virtually, had assured them of his support. The TVK chief has been facing flak from certain sections for not visiting the affected families in person.

The development follows his virtual interactions on Tuesday, during which he assured the families of his support and comforted one grieving mother by saying, “I am like your son”.

The stampede occurred on September 27 during Vijay’s political rally in Karur, resulting in 41 deaths and over 60 injuries. Authorities noted that around 27,000 people attended the event.

Meanwhile, the TVK has filed a plea in the Supreme Court seeking an impartial investigation led by a former top-court judge into the tragic stampede.

On October 10, the Supreme Court will hear a plea challenging the Madras High Court order refusing a CBI probe into the Karur stampede.
