7 workers killed after tunnel collapses in Sikkim, rescue operation underway
A tragic incident took place in which seven workers lost their lives after being trapped inside a tunnel collapse in Sikkim
Gangtok: A tragic incident took place in which seven workers lost their lives after being trapped inside a under-construction tunnel collapse in Samardung, Jholungey, under Namchi District. Sikkim yesterday.
Following the incident, the collapse resulted in tunnel block and gas leakage and fear trapping several workers inside.
7 workers have lost their lives in this incident and their bodies were taken to Singtam District Hospital, STNM Hospital, Gangtok, and Namchi District Hospital, ANI reports.
As per reports, more than 20 workers were trapped inside and so far 12 have been rescued. The operation to search for trapped people is still in process.
NDRF, SDRF, Sikkim Police, Fire Services, Health Department, and local administration are carrying out the rescue operation using heavy machines to remove the debris and rescue the workers.
The rescue operation is facing some difficulties due to unstable ground and the gas leak.
The tunnel is part of the NHPC Teesta Stage-VI hydropower project. Authorities are continuing the rescue operation and monitoring the situation closely.
Further investigation into this matter is underway.
