Three Air India aircraft damaged at Delhi airport after stormy weather
Ground support equipment collided with parked aircraft at IGI Airport Terminal 2 due to severe winds and heavy rain.
New Delhi: Three Air India planes parked at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) were damaged as strong winds and rain unleashed at Delhi over Sunday evening.
It forced several pieces of ground support equipment, stationed at Terminal 2 of IGI Airport, into collision with parked planes.
While the airport, which had three Air India aircraft, seemed like it was about to see major damage, authorities said only the three Air India planes parked at Terminal 2 had been struck.
According to Reports, all three planes were narrow-body aircraft that were stationary at the time they were hit by the ground support equipment.
The airlines also mentioned that all three airplanes have been withdrawn from service pending checks and repairs.
While one of the three airplanes may stay grounded for several days, as it seems to have taken comparatively more damage compared to the other two, which may be back in operation within the week after extensive checks.
Online pictures show several pieces of airport baggage equipment and a set of stairs getting carried across the tarmac due to the storm. However, fortunately, no injury has been reported.
