New Delhi: The Supreme Court heard a plea on the stray dogs in Delhi and reserved its judgement on the stray dogs issue on Thursday. The rehearing was held following major protests in this regard.

On SC reserving order on stray dogs in Delhi-NCR, Advocate Vikas Gautam, told ANI, “… The Delhi government’s representative said that dogs bite even after they are sterilised. They are completely against animals and dogs. They said that if a snake doesn’t bite, then should we start keeping them at home?…”

On SC reserving order on stray dogs in Delhi-NCR, Trustee at People for Animals India, Gauri Maulekhi, told ANI, “All the advocates in the Court today said that such an order is neither practical nor in the interest of humans or animals.”

She told ANI, “Many compassionate people and important lawyers of the Bar attended the hearing today. We saw that more than 150 lawyers came to the hearing. There was no space to even stand in the courtroom… Today, the court heard everyone peacefully and reserved the order. We hope that this fatal order will be stayed…”

The Supreme Court on August 11 gave its verdict on the menace of stray dogs in Delhi-NCR area. The Supreme Court has ordered the rescue of dogs in the entire NCR area including Delhi and Noida-Ghaziabad, and to keep them in safe places.

In Delhi, the MCD and NDMC have been directed to immediately pick up stray dogs.

The menace of stray dogs is always seen in the Delhi-NCR region. Due to this, people are forced to live in fear because of dogs. Recently, dogs attacked many people. Now the Supreme Court has issued a major order in this regard.

All stray dogs in the Delhi-NCR region will be caught. After this, they will be kept in a safe place. It has been ordered to build shelters for 5,000 dogs. The court has ordered that all stray dogs be caught and kept in dog shelters within eight weeks. The court has also clarified that no dog will be returned.

The Supreme Court, while giving the order, said that the department which will catch these stray dogs will maintain a record of how many stray dogs are caught in a day. The court has directed the officials to release stray dogs in all the areas. If any person or organization obstructs the catching or trapping of stray dogs, then action will be taken against them.

The judgement met major protests following which, Chief Justice of India BR Gavai said he would examine the ongoing issue relating to community dogs, after an advocate mentioned the matter, saying different benches of the Supreme Court have issued conflicting directions.

The matter relating to stray dogs was mentioned before a bench headed by the CJI for urgent listing, to which the CJI said, “I will look into this.” Advocate Nanita Sharma said two benches of the apex court have passed different orders on the stray dogs issue.
