Supreme Court awards compensation to transgender woman for being terminated due to her gender from two schools

New Delhi: In a major decision, Supreme Court has awarded compensation to a transgender woman whose appointment as a teacher was terminated by two private schools in Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat.

According to reports the two schools terminated her after they came to know about her gender identity. The Supreme Court held that the grounds of her termination was invalid.

Reports further added that, the bench led by Justice J.B. Pardiwala, observed that the judgment “will go a long way in protecting the rights of transgender persons.”

The Court also constituted a committee headed by former Delhi High Court judge, Justice Asha Menon to look into issues concerning equal opportunities, inclusive medical care, and protection for gender non-conforming and gender-diverse persons.
