Sunil Arora to be new Chief Election Commissioner of India

New Delhi: President Ram Nath Kovind on Tuesday approved the appointment of Sunil Arora as the new Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India.

62-year-old former bureaucrat Arora will succeed Om Prakash Rawat who retires on Saturday. Sources said the formal notification will be issued soon.

He will have a nearly two-and-a-half-year tenure as CEC, with the general election 2019 to be conducted under his administration.

A 1980-batch IAS officer of the Rajasthan cadre, Arora was appointed as Election Commissioner in August, last year.

Earlier, he had worked in ministries such as finance, textiles and the Planning Commission.
