Six people killed in new wave of violence in Manipur

Manipur: A new wave of violence has erupted between warring communities in Jiribam district of Manipur on Saturday. This has resulted in the death of at least six people in the violence.

Due to the violence , the state authorities had to resort to the deployment of helicopters to keep an eye on the situation and additional forces equipped with drone-detection systems to keep situation under control and to catch the violence creators.

The state recently dealt with a drone and rocket attacks on Imphal valley.

Following the attack, the chief minister of Manipur, N Biren Singh held an emergency meeting with MLAs from the ruling coalition, comprising BJP, Naga People’s Front, and National Peoples Party (NPP) last evening. Then he met with governor L Acharya at Raj Bhavan and briefed him on the situation.

On Friday, militants fired long-range rockets that resulted in the death of a priest and five others were critically injured. The incident took place in Moirang of Bishnupur district in Imphal valley, which is more than 200km east of Jiribam.

While the incident is yet to cool down, multiple attack reports were made from various places of the state. On Saturday, militants killed Yurembam Kulendra Singha (63) in Nungchappi village in Jiribam. Then they attacked the nearby Rasidpur village and clashed with local volunteers and killed Baspatimayum Lakhi Kumar Sharma (41).

Later, Jiribam SP and his team recovered three more bodies. Manipur IG (intelligence) K Kabib said that the three deceased were the “suspected miscreants”.
