Several feared trapped as Mumbai chawl collapses, rescue operation underway

At least seven people have been rescued as a Mumbai chawl collapsed today morning. The chawl no 37 collapsed.

Mumbai: As many as seven inhabitants in a chawl in Mumbai were injured and several are feared dead after second and third floors collapsed early on Friday morning. The chawl number 37 near Namaj Committee Masjid in Bharat Nagar, Bandra East in Mumbai collapsed.

According to information, the incident occurred around 6.00 am today and the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) declared it a Level-2 emergency. It is a three storeyed building and a ground floor is also there.

Around 8 to 10 people are still buried under the debris. A rescue operation is underway including the MFB, Mumbai Police, Maharashtra Housing Area Development Authority (MHADA), Public Works Development (PWD) and several others were engaged in the rescue work.

During the filing of the report seven people were pulled out from the rubble and have been rushed to the Bhaba Hospital in Bandra. The cause behind the collapse is yet to be known. However it is suspected that the building collapsed due to monsoon and the structural instability of the old building.
