New-Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday issues notice to Centre, Twitter and others on a plea seeking a mechanism to check Twitter content and advertisements spreading hatred through fake news and instigative messages through bogus accounts.

The petition was filed by BJP leader Vinit Goenka seeking a direction to the central government to devise a mechanism to check “anti-India” and “seditious” posts on social media platforms, especially Twitter.

Notably, the Centre earlier this week had issued a notice to Twitter, asking the micro-blogging website to block over 1,100 accounts for spreading misinformation and fake news about the ongoing farmers protest on the outskirts of Delhi.

The Centre on Thursday warned that social media companies will need to follow India’s laws or face strict action.
