SC issues contempt notice against Rahul Gandhi over ‘Chowkidar chor hai’ remark

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued a formal criminal contempt notice against Congress President Rahul Gandhi for attributing the comment “chowkidar chor hai” to the court judgement of April 10 in connection with Rafale judgment.

A bench, headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, today said it will hear the criminal contempt petition filed by BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi against Gandhi on the 30th of this month along with the pending review petition against its December last year’s verdict in the Rafale jet deal.

The apex court today rejected the Congress President’s plea to close the criminal contempt petition filed by Lekhi.

However, the top court has said that there is no need for Rahul Gandhi to make a personal appearance on April 30 to respond to the contempt case against him.
