SC bars Interim CBI Chief Rakesh Asthana from taking policy decisions

New Delhi: Making hearing in the plea of exiled CBI Director Alok Verma against his removal from his post on Tuesday, the Supreme Court today ordered the Central Vigilance Commission or CVC to complete its probe within 2 weeks and barred the Interim CBI Chief from taking any policy decision.

The probe is to be conducted by ex-Supreme Court judge AK Patnaik, said Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi.

In the hearing which started a short while ago from now, the apex court also barred the Interim Director of the agency from taking any major policy decision and allowed him for only essential decisions.

“List of all decisions by Nageswara Rao between 20 October till today to be given to Supreme Court in a sealed cover,” said SC in its order.

A three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justices SK Kaul and KM Joseph is making hearing in the case in which advocate Fali Nariman is representing Verma.

Apart from Alok Verma’s plea, the apex court will also hear a public interest litigation filed by NGO Common Cause, which has sought quashing of the Central Vigilance Commission order of October 23 in which it had sought action against Verma.

Notably, in a mid-night move on Tuesday, the Central Government stripped Verma of his powers and send him on leave following an internal feud between him and Special Director Rakesh Asthana. Later, the government replaced Verama by N Nageshwar Rao as interim director of CBI.

The move was widely criticised by Opposition parties which claimed the move was based on malafide reasons. Congress party also stage an agitation outside the agency’s headquarters against the government’s move at 11 am today. It will be led by party president Rahul Gandhi.

The next hearing on the case will be on November 12.
