Sabarimala: The famous Ayappa temple here in Kerala was opened for 70-day long Mandala-Makaravilakku annual pilgrimage season on Friday at 5 PM amidst tight security.

The temple tantri Kandararu Rajeevaru and chief priest AV Unnikrishnan Namboothiri opened the ‘sanctum sanctorum’ of the temple.

Thousands of devotees have reached the temple premises for darshan.

The mandalam festival will conclude on December 27 after Mandala pooja, when the shrine will close after the ‘Athazhapuja’ in the evening.

Earlier on the day, high drama was witnessed at the Kochi airport as activist Trupti Desai and six other women flew to Kochi to pray at the shrine but were forced to remain in the airport for hours as hundreds of activists blocked their exit.

Later, Desai returned hometown Pune as the protesters protesters did not allow her to proceed to the shrine.

Foreseeing protest from devotees opposing the Supreme Court verdict allowing the entry for women of all ages into the temple, a seven-day prohibitory order has come into effect from yesterday night at four places in and around the temple premises.
