Road links in Himachal affected with widespread snow

Shimla: Road links in Himachal Pradesh on Saturday were hampered a day after widespread snow and rain, blocking highways and link roads, while a large number of commuters were stranded across the state, officials said.

Snow hit vehicular movement beyond Shimla town, while traffic on the Pathankot-Chamba highway was also badly affected. The entire Kinnaur district is cut off. There was no loss of life.

After two consecutive days of snowfall, most roads in the state interiors remained closed to traffic, stranding travellers and commuters.

Road links to Kinnaur district and towns in Shimla district such as Jubbal, Kharapathar, Rohru and Chopal were cut off, a government official told IANS.

While Manali recorded 10 cm of snowfall, it was 13 cm in Kalpa and Keylong each. Dharamsala had 86 mm of rainfall.

Dalhousie in Chamba district also saw snowfall.

“There is no movement of traffic towards Kinnaur district on the National Highway-5 beyond Tapri. Work is on to restore electricity in Kinnaur. The Pangi valley in Chamba district is also cut off from the rest of the state,” an official said.

The minimum temperature in Shimla was minus 0.5 degree Celsius, which had 8 cm of snow, while temperatures in Dalhousie, Kufri, Manali and Dalhousie were minus 3.9 degrees Celsius, minus 1.8 degrees, minus 1.6 degrees and minus 0.4 degrees Celsius respectively.

Kufri had 20 cm of snow and the snow cover will stay in the next two-three days.

The weather bureau said the weather would be clear after Sunday.
