New Delhi: The first batch of the anti-COVID drug, 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) has been released by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. It was handed over to Minister for Health and Family Welfare Harsh Vardhan in New Delhi on Monday.

One box each of the sachets of the drug has been handed over to Director of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Randeep Guleria and Lt General Sunil Kant of Armed Forces Medical Services(AFMS).

“Not just for India but I hope it serves in the fight against COVID, globally in the coming days. I thank & congratulate DRDO & its scientists. We’ve seen under PM Modi leadership DRDO has played an important role in the fight against COVID19,” said Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan.

It was approved for emergency use as an adjunct therapy in moderate to severe COVID-19 patients by the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) on May 1.

The DRDO along with DRL Hyderabad had started the clinical trials to test the safety and efficacy of the drug in coronavirus patients and during Phase-II trials (including dose ranging). The trials were conducted during May to October in 2020. The drug was found to be safe in COVID-19 patients and showed significant improvement in their recovery.

It is to be noted that Phase IIa was conducted in six hospitals and Phase IIb (dose ranging) clinical trial was conducted at 11 hospitals all over the country. Phase-II trial was conducted on a total of 110 patients.
