Rajiv Gandhi’s 31st death anniversary, Sonia, Rahul Gandhi pay homage

New Delhi: On Rajiv Gandhi’s 31st death anniversary, Congress President Rahul Gandhi, took to his twitter handle to post a tribute to his late father and the former PM of the country.

He captioned the post: “My father was a visionary leader whose policies helped shape modern India. He was a compassionate & kind man, and a wonderful father to me and Priyanka, who taught us the value of forgiveness and empathy. I dearly miss him and fondly remember the time we spent together.”

Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi also paid homage to the late PM at Vir Bhumi in Delhi. Congress leaders P Chidambaram and Sachin Pilot were also involved in the same.

Meanwhile, Avinash Pande, Congress General Secretary, said that the late leader “left an indelible mark on the country with his ideas of economic reforms,decentralization of power to panchayati raj institutions ,technology for benefit of comment men,and concept of India as a great global power”.

Followed by the assassination of his mother Indira Gandhi in 1984, Rajiv Gandhi took over the charge of the Congress at the age of 40, thus becoming the country’s youngest Prime Minister to assume office. He served as the PM till December 2, 1989.

Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by a suicide bomber of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) during an election rally in Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu on this day in 1991.

During Rajiv Gandhi’s tenure as Prime Minister, India witnessed a telecom revolution with technology at the driving seat.

In August 1984, the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) was established to develop state-of-the-art telecommunication technology.
