Railway Min announces new railway zone named South Coast Railway (SCoR)

New Delhi: Keeping one of its key promises made during the bifurcation of the then Andhra Pradesh State, Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal yesterday announced the creation of a new railway zone named South Coast Railway (SCoR).

The new zone will comprise of existing Guntakal, Guntur and Vijayawada divisions of South Central Railway (SCR) in Andhra Pradesh by splitting of Waltair division into two parts. One part will be incorporated into the new division after being merged with the neighbouring Vijayawada division . The remaining portion of the Waltier division will be converted into a new division, with headquarters at Rayagada of Odisha under the East Coast railway (ECoR).

After creation of the new zone, the South Central Railway will now reduce to Hyderabad, Secunderabad and Nanded divisions.

Notably, the demand for a separate zone with its headquarters at Visakhapatnam was being raised along with the special category state status for Andhra Pradesh and seen as a catalyst in generating more revenue for the state.
