Rahul Gandhi granted bail in defamation case, next hearing on April 13

The Congress leader had moved a plea in Surat's sessions court to set aside the Magistrate order convicting him in the defamation case

Surat: Rahul Gandhi has been granted bail in the 2019 Modi surname defamation case by the Gujarat court till April 13.

Earlier, there were reports that Rahul Gandhi will seek suspension of his sentence.

The Congress leader had moved a plea in Surat’s sessions court to set aside the Magistrate order convicting him in the defamation case for a remark seen as an insult to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Rahul Gandhi arrived in Surat to appeal against a court order which convicted him in a 2019 defamation case in the company of his family and party leaders.

Many congress workers had gathered outside District and Sessions Court in Surat in support of Rahul Gandhi.

The court of Chief Judicial Magistrate HH Varma on March 23 convicted the Congress leader and sentenced him to two years in jail in a 2019 criminal defamation case filed against him over his “Modi surname” remarks.
