Punjab former speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal joins BJP
Charanjit Singh Atwal a former speaker of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, resigned from the primary membership of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD)
New-Delhi: Former Speaker of Punjab Assembly and an ex-leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal Charanjit Singh Atwal joined Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the presence of party national president JP Nadda in Delhi.
On April 19, Charanjit Singh Atwal, 86, a former speaker of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, resigned from the primary membership of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD).
Charanjit was the deputy speaker of the Lok Sabha from 2004-2009 and speaker of the Punjab assembly twice. He unsuccessfully contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from the Jalandhar constituency against Santokh Singh Chaudhary of the Congress.

He became an MLA for the first time in 1977 and was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1985, 1997 and 2004. In 2012, he again contested the state assembly elections successfully and became speaker of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha.
