PM Modi confers Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar prizes for 2016, 2017 and 2018

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi conferred the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar prizes for 2016, 2017 and 2018, at an event in Vigyan Bhawan here on Thursday.

As many as eleven scientists were given the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for 2016. The awardees include Dr Rishikesh Narayan of Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru and Dr Amalendu Krishna of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai.

Among the ten scientists who got the prize for 2017 are Dr Deepak Gaur of Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi and Dr S Suresh Babu of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre. There were thirteen prize winners for 2018. They include Dr Amit Kumar of IIT, Delhi and Dr Nitin Saxena, IIT, Kanpur.

Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister urged scientists to mould their research in accordance with the needs of the society and the economy and pitched for cross-disciplinary research.  He said that our scientific institutions should align with future requirements and try to find solutions for local problems.

The Prime Minister emphasized the need for R&D in the new and emerging fields like Big Data, Machine Learning, Block Chain and Artificial Intelligence. He added that the National Mission on Inter-Disciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems will improve research and development in these fields.

The Prime Minister hailed the world-class achievements of the scientific community while working with limited resources. In this context, he mentioned about India’s hugely successful space programs of ISRO, exceptional growth of the Indian pharmaceutical sector and various CSIR initiatives.

The Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, named after the founder Director of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, Dr Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar, is given annually to recognize outstanding Indian work in various disciplines of Science and Technology.
