PM Modi announces Vishwakarma Scheme to empower traditional skilled workers

New Delhi: On the occasion of India’s 77th Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a significant address from the iconic Red Fort. During his speech, PM Modi unveiled the Vishwakarma scheme, aimed at supporting individuals with traditional skills, such as barbers, goldsmiths, and washermen, among others. The scheme comes with an allocation ranging from Rs. 13,000 crore to Rs. 15,000 crore.
Highlighting the importance of this initiative, PM Modi emphasised that the scheme is meant to benefit skilled workers and craftspeople. He announced that the Vishwakarma scheme is set to launch next month, precisely on Vishwakarma Jayanti, scheduled for September 17, 2023.
The PM Vishwakarma Scheme’s primary objective is to enhance the quality, scale, and accessibility of products and services offered by artisans and craftspeople. By integrating them into both domestic and global value chains, the scheme aims to economically empower these workers, with special consideration for those belonging to marginalized communities such as Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Communities, women, transgender individuals, and other vulnerable sections of society.
In his address, the Prime Minister also turned his attention to the people of Manipur, a state in the North-Eastern region of India. Expressing concern over the violence in the state, PM Modi stressed the significance of peace as the only viable solution to disputes. He assured that both the Central and state governments are working diligently to uphold peace in the region.
