Bhubaneswar/New Delhi: After the two recent cases of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 reported in Mumbai on Monday, the tally of the new coronavirus variant has reached to 23 in the country.

Omicron Covid variant reportedly reached India as two cases were reported in Karnataka first.

The third case was reported in Jamnagar of Gujarat and another in Maharashtra.

Later, 7 cases were reported in Maharashtra, of which six belonged to the same family. These include a Nigerian woman, 44, of Indian origin, and her two daughters arriving in Pune from Lagos, and another man who recently paid visit to Finland. Also, the 45-year old brother of the 44-year old woman and his two children were infected and tested positive for Omicron, and all seven are under treatment at a hospital.

Similarly in Jaipur, nine cases of the Omicron variant were confirmed. All of these people had reportedly attended the same wedding.

In Delhi, a 30 year old man was found to be infected with the new variant and admitted to hospital.

And after the two cases of Omicron variant in Maharashtra today, the state’s tally reached to 10 as per the State health department.

Odisha:

In Odisha amid Omicron threat, 246 samples from various districts of Odisha were sent to Institute of Life Sciences (ILS), Bhubaneswar on Monday for genome sequencing, reports said.

Earlier, genome sequencing of 141 samples were done. However fortunately, not a single case found to be Omicron variant.

Odisha health minister Naba Kishore Das said there is no need to panic and the state government is closely monitoring the situation.

According to sources, over 800 persons from the foreign countries that were placed in the ‘at-risk’ countries have been returned to the Odisha since the detection of the Omicron variant of Covid-19.

Delta variant and Omicron:

As per scientists while it is too early to confirm, Omicron has the potential to spread much faster and infect vastly more people than Delta. Based on the rise in COVID-19 cases and on sequencing data, researchers estimate that Omicron can infect three to six times as many people as Delta, over the same time period.

Omicron has proved to be less virulent in producing severe infections but definitely 5 to 10 times more potent in transmissibility than the Delta virus.

Right now, scientists think that omicron is likely to be as contagious as delta or more, and that level of contagiousness will strain health care systems if left unchecked.
