Old video of gangrape of college student goes viral, Karnataka cops arrest 5

Bengaluru: An old video of an 18-year old college student getting raped got viral recently. The video getting viral helped police nab the culprits.

The Karnataka police on Wednesday arrested five people for allegedly gang-raping the college girl. Later, on Thursday, the police arrested and booked eight people for circulating the videos.

Although the incident took place on April 3, it came to light on Tuesday after two videos were circulated across several WhatsApp groups. The police filed a Suo Motu case after being alerted by the social media monitoring cell of the Dakshina Kannada police department.

Police then approached the girl to file a complaint. The girl and the suspects who have been identified hail from the same college.

Officials familiar with the investigation said they were investigating allegations that the victim had been drugged before the gang-rape.

The district police said in a press release, “We request members of the public to not transmit the referred videos over social media or save the referred videos on their phones/computers. Doing so is an offence under Section 354C of the IPC and 66E, 66A of IT Act and the persons (including group admins) will be made the accused under the said sections.”
