Odisha cadre IPS officer appointed as Police observer for Varanasi

New Delhi: Election Commission on Wednesday appointed an Odisha cadre IPS officer as the Police Observer for Varanasi Parliamentary Constituency for the ensuing Lok Sabha elections.

The poll body appointed Odisha’s Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Lalit Das as the Police Observer for Varanasi Lok Sabha constituency, from where PM Narendra Modi will contest the upcoming elections.

Das has been asked to start his work from April 29. He will supervise and monitor the work being done by the police in view of the Lok Sabha polls, sources said.

In 2014 Lok Sabha elections, PM Modi had contested from Varanasi as well as Vadodara in his home state Gujarat. After winning both seats, he decided to retain the holy city in Uttar Pradesh.

Varanasi will vote on May 19, in the last round of seven-phase polls that start on April 11.
