Nation celebrates Constitution Day

New Delhi : The Constitution Day , also known as Samvidhan Divas, is being celebrated today across the country to mark the adopting of the ‘Constitution of India’ by the Constituent Assembly on this day in 1949.

This year, the Constitution Day marks the 70th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution, which came into force on 26th January, 1950.

The Constitution declares India a sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic republic, assuring its citizens justice, equality and liberty and endeavours to promote fraternity.

The government has planned yearlong activities throughout the country to mark 70 years of the adoption of the Constitution.

National Campaign will also launch that focus on the fundamental duties an important feature of the Constitution. It has started from today and will culminate on 26 November, 2020.

The ‘Preamble’ of the Constitution was read in all the Government Offices or Institutions at 11:00 AM today.

A joint sitting of both the Houses of Parliament held today to mark the occasion.

President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla addressed the joint sitting.

Speaking on the occasion, PM Modi said, “The Constitution of India highlights both rights and duties of citizens. This is a special aspect of our Constitution. Let us think about how we can fulfil the duties mentioned in our Constitution.”

In 2015, the Narendra Modi Government declared 26 November as Constitution Day by a gazette notification on 19 November.
