Aizawl: Mizoram Legislative Assembly Speaker and senior Congress leader Hiphei on Monday resigned from his post both in the House and the Congress party. He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) few hours later today.

The veteran Congress leader said he submitted his resignation letter to Deputy Speaker R. Lalrinawma who accepted it. From there, he went to Congress Bhavan to resign as his primary membership of the party.

The move came a little over three weeks ahead of the assembly elections in the state.

The Congress had earlier named Hiphei as its candidate for the Palak constituency, but replaced him with party general secretary K T Rokhaw last week following reports that said he might move to the BJP.

He is the fifth Congress MLA to resign from the 40-member House since September.

The seven-time Congress legislator (between 1972 and 1989 from Tuipang) was elected to the Mizoram Assembly from Palak constituency in 2013.  He also served as Rajya Sabha MP for two terms (1990 – 1996 and 1996 – 2002).
