Mayawati, Akhilesh Yadav May Not Contest Lok Sabha Elections: Reports

Lucknow: As per reports, BSP Chief Mayawati and former UP CM Akhilesh Yadav are rethinking about their candidature in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

Both the leaders are split over contesting the polls because of the hectic campaign schedule, which is leaving them with very little time to canvass for themselves.

Akhilesh had earlier said that he intends to contest from Kannauj in place of his wife and sitting MP Dimple Yadav. However, on International Women’s Day, Dimple was named SP candidate from Kannauj. After this, speculations are rife that Akhilesh may now contest the polls from Azamgarh, now occupied by his father, Mulayam Singh Yadav.

“Of late, party strategists suggested he should not confine himself to any seat during polls as he will be preoccupied with campaigning for Mulayam, Dimple and other party candidates,” said a senior party leader.

Coming to the BSP, it was being reported that Mayawati may contest from Nagina or Ambedkar Nagar. However, the party has now decided to field candidates in a number of states and Mayawati will be visiting those constituencies for campaign. Thus, it would be difficult for her to contest polls herself.

Meanwhile, Mayawati will hold 11 joint rallies and 30 rallies for BSP across various states in the country. On April 3 and 4, the BSP chief will start campaign in the South, where she has entered into electoral pacts in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
