Lok Sabha to take up Triple Talaq Bill today; BJP issues whip

New Delhi : The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, also known as Triple Talaq Bill,  is scheduled to be taken up for consideration and passing in Lok Sabha on Thursday.

Union law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad is expected to introduce the revised Bill.

The Bill proposes all declarations of instant triple talaq void and illegal. It seeks to make the practice a punishable offence with imprisonment of up to three years.

In September, the government made instant Triple Talaq punishable through an ordinance or executive order. The proposed law will replace the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Ordinance-2018.

Meanwhile, the BJP has issued whip to its Lok Sabha members asking them to be present in the House today.

Both the Houses of Parliament will resume today after a weekend and a three-day break on account of Christmas.
