Life Imprisonment to Somali Pirates In First Maritime Anti-Piracy Verdict

Mumbai: In what is being called a first of its kind judgment since independence, a Special Sessions Court in Mumbai has sentenced all accused Somali pirates to life imprisonment under the Maritime Anti-Piracy Act. ANI reported this in an X message today.
Special Public Prosecutor Ranjit Sangale said the ruling marks a historic conviction. “To the best of my knowledge, this marks a first in India’s post-independence history: a Special Sessions Court, constituted under the Maritime Anti-Piracy Act, has sentenced 100% of the accused to life imprisonment for at least two separate offences,” Sangale said.
The case relates to the hijacking of a merchant vessel where approximately 17 seafarers were held hostage by the accused for over 90 days. The pirates had demanded an extortion sum of 60 million dollars.
“We possessed the emails regarding this, which facilitated the investigation,” Sangale added.
Following the hijacking, a distress signal was sent out. The Indian Navy responded, being the only navy to do so at the time.
“In a prolonged operation lasting 40 hours, the mission was accomplished; not a single crew member lost their life, and all were safely rescued,” Sangale said.
All the accused were subsequently arrested, brought to Mumbai, and handed over to the Yellow Gate Police Station for further legal proceedings.
