Incident seems like rerun of tragic RG Kar Medical College case, female student of law college in Kolkata was sexually assaulted, 3 arrested
Kolkata: In another shocking incident reminiscent of the previous tragedy in RG Kar Medical College, three suspects have been detained in regard to the reported gang-rape of a female student at a law college in Kasba, Kolkata.
The arrest of two current students and one alumnus was conducted after quick action by the police following the complaint by the survivor. The unidentified victim, whose health recently deteriorated, filed her first information report (FIR) following the suspected assault that occurred between 7:30 pm and 8:50 pm on June 25.
Police arrested two current law students from the Talbagan region Thursday evening; further interrogation resulted in the arrest of a former student, who is the prime suspect. The survivor was taken for a medical test at Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital. Meanwhile, forensic experts are sweeping through the crime scene to collect more evidence.
All three accused are likely to be produced in court later today. The police have not closed the doors on more arrests as the probe continues. The incident has once again sparked political rhetoric and allegations. BJP IT-cell head Amit Malviya called the incident “horrific,” attributing it to Trinamool Congress members and comparing it to the sensational RG Kar case. “The horror of RG Kar hasn’t dissipated, yet similar ghastly crimes keep piling up daily in Bengal,” he stated.
This disturbing incident follows less than a year after an August 2024 rape‑murder of a 31‑year‑old trainee doctor within RG Kar Medical College, which led to countrywide protests and calls for added security measures in schools.
