Kolkata: Bridge collapse kills 1, many injured

Kolkata: A person was killed and several people were severely injured as a portion of the arterial Majerhat bridge in Alipore area of South Kolkata collapsed this evening.

Kolkata Commissioner of Police informed that one person died while 16 have been injured. Nine persons have been admitted at SSKM hospital and seven are at CMRO.

Some vehicles including a passenger bus were also crushed during the incident

Fire brigade, police, NDRF personnel along with the locals have been carrying out the rescue work. Many others are also feared trap under the debris.

Meanwhile, the Kolkata Traffic Police has closed traffic on Diamond Harbour Road from CGR Road.

Owing to the collapse, the EMU local train services were suspended from 4.45 PM. However, train services in the Sealdah-Budge Budge section, which also passes under the bridge, was normal.

While speaking to the newsmen about the incident, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is currently in Darjeeling, expressed her concern over the matter and said that she has ordered an investigation into the bridge collapse.

She further said that the state government will bear the medical expenses of the injured persons.
