Kashmir Cut Off From Rest Of India Due To Heavy Snowfall

Srinagar: Kashmir was cut off from the rest of the country due to heavy snowfall. The isolation was both aerial as well as surface as the entire valley has been covered with a thick blanket of snow, throwing normal life out of gear.

The Jammu-Srinagar highway was closed due to heavy snowfall. Most places in Kashmir, including the plains, received moderate to heavy snowfall on Friday night.

The snowfall in the valley continued on Saturday morning, making it one of the heaviest snowfalls in Kashmir in the recent years.

Officials said Srinagar recorded 10 inches of snowfall till 8:30 on Saturday morning while Gulmarg in north Kashmir recorded two feet of fresh snow. Similarly, Qazigund recorded 11 inches, Kokernag three inches, Pahalgam 16 inches and Kupwara 17 inches of snow.

The Mughal Road, Srinagar-Leh National Highway and Bandipora-Gurez road were also closed for traffic due to heavy snowfall in the higher reaches of the valley.

The snowfall also disrupted the air traffic to and from Srinagar international airport. An official of the airport said the flight which lands at the airport at 9 am was cancelled due to poor visibility because of the snowfall.

The snowfall has also disrupted normal life and affected the movement of people and transport in Srinagar and other parts of the valley.
