Justice Ranjan Gogoi appointed as the next Chief Justice of India

New Delhi: President Ram Nath Kovind on Thursday appointed Justice Ranjan Gogoi as the next Chief Justice of India.

According to reports, Justice Ranjan Gogoi will assume office on October 3rd, 2018 after the retirement of the current Chief Justice, Justice Dipak Misra.

Notably, the present Chief Justice of India had sent a letter to the Central government recommending Justice Ranjan Gogoi as his successor on September 4.

Justice Gogoi, who was born on 18th November, 1954, was enrolled as an advocate in 1978. He practised law in the Gauhati High Court on constitutional, taxation and company matters.

Later, he was posted as a Permanent Judge of the Gauhati High Court on February 28, 2001 and was transferred to the Punjab & Haryana High Court on September 9, 2010.

He was then appointed as the Chief Justice of the same High Court on February 12, 2011, before being transferred as a Judge of the apex court of the country on April 23, 2012.
