Sriharikota: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched RISAT-2B, an in-orbit radar imaging satellite on May 22 from The First Launch Pad (FLP) of Sriharikota Range (SHAR) at 5:30 am as scheduled.

A Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) carrying 615-kg weighing RISAT-2B injected it into the lower earth orbit (LEO).

This launch is the 48th mission of the PSLV-C46 and the14th flight of the PSLV core-alone configuration. This has also been the 72nd mission from SHAR and 36th launch from FLP.

Speaking to media persons on Tuesday, K Sivan, Chairman of ISRO, said that the PSLV-C46 will be an earth observation satellite and will give more accurate information/observations. The satellite is configured with a mission life of about five years.

It possesses day-night as well as an all-weather monitoring capability. It is also configured in a way to track hostile ships at sea that are deemed to be a military threat for India.

“This is a very important mission as far as India is concerned. It is an excellent satellite. This is an earth observation satellite for remote sensing operation and has a very high accurate observation,” the Chairman added.

ISRO opened the viewer’s gallery at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota for public view of the launch of RISAT-2B. ISRO made public view provision earlier this year on April 1 during the launch of PSLV-C45.

Sivan said that the next mission of ISRO will be the launch of Chandrayaan-2. It will be launched from July 9 to July 16. It is scheduled to land on the moon on September 16.
