In the early hours of Tuesday, residents of Delhi witnessed a striking sight as the International Space Station (ISS) moved across the early morning sky. At around 5:48 am IST, the ISS appeared as a bright, steady point of light, slowly gliding over the Indian sky and catching the eyes of early risers and sky watchers.
Aboard this orbiting station is Group Captain Shubhranshu Shukla of the Indian Air Force, who is currently part of the ISS’s international crew.
The ISS orbits Earth about 400 kilometres above us and travels at a speed of nearly 28,000 kilometres per hour, completing one full circle around the planet every 90 minutes.
To the naked eye, it appears like a shining star moving silently overhead but it can be easily recognised by its constant glow without any blinking lights.
The ISS will reportedly continue to pass over Delhi and other parts of India in the coming days. The best time to watch is just before sunrise or shortly after sunset, when the station remains sunlit against the darker sky.
