Indian Navy set to increase its strength

World’s fastest cruise missile BrahMos to be fitted on latest frigates being built in Russia.

New Delhi: Defence Council of India, chaired by Defence Minister Mrs. Nirmala Sitharaman, gave approval today for procurement of BrahMos missiles on two of the vessels being built in Russia.

The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) had decided in October for the procurement of four Grigorovich-class ‘Project 1135.6’ frigates, which will be then equipped with BrahMos Missiles system instead of 3M-54E Klub-N anti-ship missiles and advanced sensors.

The indigenously designed BrahMos missile is an Indo-Russian joint venture. It is a tested and a proven supersonic cruise missile and will form the primary weapon on board of these vessels.

In modern navies, frigates are used to protect other warships and merchant-marine ships, especially as anti-submarine warfare (ASW) combatants for amphibious expeditionary forces, underway replenishment groups, and merchant convoys.
