India to roll out new Rs 20 Coins soon

New Delhi: The government of India is all set to roll out Rs 20 coins for the first time in the country. The Union Ministry of Finance in a notification released on Wednesday listed a few characteristics of the new coins.

The new 12 edged (Polygon) coins of Rs 20 will be 27 millimetres in diameter with an outer ring made of nickel brass (copper: 65 per cent, Zinc: 15 per cent and nickel: 20 per cent). The centrepiece will be made of nickel brass (copper: 75 per cent, Zinc: 20 per cent and nickel: 5 per cent), according to the notification.

The notification also mentioned the new series of prototypes of coins of Re 1, Rs 2, Rs 5 and Rs 10.

The new Re 1 coin will be 20 millimetres in diameter with 83 per cent of iron and 17 per cent chromium.

The Rs 2 coin will be 23 millimetres in diameter with a metal composition of ferritic stainless steel.

The new nickel brass coins of Rs 5 coin will be 25 millimetres in diameter made of 75 per cent copper, 20 per cent zinc and 5 per cent nickel.

The new Rs 10 coins will be 27 millimetres in diameter and will be two-toned like the existing coin. The outer ring will be made of nickel brass with 75 per cent copper, 20 per cent zinc and 5 per cent nickel. The centre will be made of nickel brass with 65 per cent copper, 15 per cent zinc and 20 per cent nickel.
