India set to create history; Chandrayaan-2 to land on moon tonight

New Delhi: India is set to create history as its lunar mission- Chandrayaan 2 is scheduled to land on the moon’s South Pole between 1.30 AM to 2.30 AM on September 7.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will navigate the lander of Chandrayaan-2 to soft-land on the moon, using the most complex ‘powered descent’ of the Lander Vikram.

After initiating the powered descent, the Lander is expected to touch down gently on the lunar South Pole in just fifteen minutes, as informed by the ISRO Chairman Dr K Sivan.

The Lander is primed to release the rover it carries after whatever dust raised from the surface is settled. It is expected to take about four hours before the rover rolls out by using a ramp that will emerge from the Lander.

The Rover is named Pragyaan, meaning wisdom, which is expected to send huge data useful to expand the understanding of the moon, along with the observations of the Orbiter and the Lander.

As the final countdown for Chandrayaan 2’s landing on the moon is on, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he is “extremely excited” to be at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) headquarters in Bengaluru tonight to watch the extraordinary moment in the history of India’s space programme.

PM Modi will witness the mega space feat live with over 60 high school students from across the country who cleared an online space quiz last month.

If successful, the mission will make India the fourth country after Russia, the US and China to pull off a soft landing on the Moon.
