New Delhi: Germany has initiated a visa-free airport transit system for Indian nationals, allowing them to transit through the country’s airports without a separate transit visa. It was announced after bilateral discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to enhance travel and people-to-people relationships.

The new provision allows the qualified Indian travellers to change flights or in-transit flights or fly through the German airports without the need to apply to obtain a Schengen transit visa, provided they are within the international transit area and fulfil the airline and immigration requirements. It is expected that the policy will be beneficial to Indians flying out of Germany to other countries and vice versa, particularly to the United Kingdom and the other non-Schengen countries.

The officials observed that the move will ease the transit process among the passengers who have to change flights at the major German airports like Frankfurt and Munich, thus saving on time, paperwork, and the cost involved in the conventional visa transit processes. The visa-free transit programme is also limited to layovers at the airport and does not provide access into the Schengen Area.

Indian travellers intending to have itineraries taking a stopover in Germany are encouraged to visit the airline’s website and make sure that they fall into the new category of transit regulations before they book.

This is consistent with other initiatives that Germany has been implementing with other nations to facilitate international travel, and it represents the current international engagement between India and the European states.
