India celebrates birth anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi, Lal Bahadur Shastri

New Delhi: The country is celebrating the 152nd birth anniversary of the “Father of the Nation” Mahatma Gandhi and the birthday of second Prime Minister of India Lal Bahadur Shastri.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to his Twitter handle for Shastri’s birthday and wrote “Tributes to former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri ji on his birth anniversary. His life based on values and principles will always remain a source of inspiration for the countrymen.” On the other hand, Modi also paid tributes to Bapu and wrote “I bow to respected Bapu on Gandhi Jayanti. His noble principles are globally relevant and give strength to millions.”

Every year people across the country celebrate Gandhi Jayanti to honour the legendary leader without whom India would not have got independence from the Britishers. Bapu was born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, Gujarat. He got married at the very young age of 13 years to Kasturba following which they lost their first child. Gandhi commemorated himself with his ideology of non-violence and peace and became relevant to all societies, religions, countries, and generations.

Gandhi shared his birthday with another legendary personality, second Prime Minister of India Lal Bahadur Shastri. He was born in 1904. Shastri served as the PM from 1964-66 and earlier served in key positions in Jawaharlal Nehru’s cabinet. He was regarded as a secularist who rejected the mixing of politics and religion and he led the country during war with Pakistan in 1965.

He is known for his slogan ‘Jai Jawan Jai Kisan’.

It is pertinent to mention that this year the birth anniversaries of Gandhi and Shastri coincides with Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. This was inaugurated on March 12 by PM Modi, on the 91st anniversary of the Dandi March.

The Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav will be celebrated till August 15, 2023, the 77th Independence Day.

Meanwhile, Odisha Governor Ganeshi Lal paid tribute to the father of nation at Gandhi’s statue in the premises of State Legislative Assembly. Speaker Surya Narayan Patro, Minister Bikram Keshari Arukha, Information & Public Relations Minister Raghunandan Das.

Similarly, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik also took to his official Twitter handle and wished on Gandhi and Shastri’s birth anniversaries.
