Google promises transparency in upcoming general elections

New Delhi: Google on Tuesday vowed to bring more transparency in political advertisements on its platform ahead of general elections in the country.

In the run up to Lok Sabha Election 2019, Google has planned to introduce an India-specific Political Advertising Transparency Report and searchable Political Ads Library.

“To bring more transparency to the online election ads, Google will introduce an India-specific Political Advertising Transparency Report and searchable Political Ads Library. These will provide comprehensive information about who is purchasing election ads on Google platforms and how much money is being spent,” Google said in a statement

The Indian Politics Ads Transperancy Report and Ads Library will go live in March, 2019.

The Internet giant will verify the identity and eligibility of advertisers before running their respective election ads on its platforms, with the advertiser verification process starting from February 14, 2019.

Advertisers will also have to submit a ‘pre-certificate’ issued by the Election Commission of India (ECI) or anyone authorized by the ECI for every election ad they intend to run.
