Kolkata: West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, broke her silence on Durgapur rape case on Sunday, stating that “girls should not be allowed to go outside at night”.
She said it is unfair to blame her government since the incident took place at a private medical college. “The college authorities should have ensured her safety.
“She was studying in a private medical college. Whose responsibility is it? How did she come out at 12.30 at night?” she asked in her first remarks to the media after the incident. The Chief Minister described the incident as “shocking” and added that Bengal police were taking all necessary steps.
She said private medical colleges should take care of their students and the “culture at night”. “They should not be allowed to come out. They have to protect themselves. It is a forest area,” Banerjee said.
The Chief Minister said the guilty will be punished. “We will take stringent action.

On Friday night, October 10, a second-year medical student from Odisha was allegedly gang-raped by unidentified men outside her college campus in West Bengal’s Durgapur.
Earlier in the day, three people were arrested in connection with the alleged gang-rape case.
