Former Supreme Court Judge Justice MY Eqbal Passes Away

New Delhi: Former Supreme Court judge Justice MY Eqbal passed away at the of 70 on Friday at New Delhi.

He was the judge of Supreme Court from December 24, 2012 to February 12, 2016. Prior to this he was the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court in 2010 replacing justice HL Gokhale.

Justice Eqbal was born on February 13, 1951. He passed his Bachelor in Science from Ranchi University in 1970 and receive his Bachelor of Law Degree in 1974. He won a gold medal for his LL.B degree as he passed with distinction.

He started his career in Ranchi as an advocate in 1975 and practiced in civil law.

In 1990, he was appointed as a Government Pleader in the Ranchi Bench of Patna High Court. Later after six years, he was appointed as a permanent Judge of the Patna High Court on May 9, 1996 and with the formation of the new state of Jharkhand in 2000 then became the Judge of the Jharkhand High Court on November 14.

In 2003, he was nominated by then Chief Justice of India VN Khare as one of the members of Ravi and Beas Water Tribunal to deal with water disputes among Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan.

Justice Eqbal, was also associated with the Jharkhand Legal Services Authority. He was the first Judge from Jharkhand to be elevated as a Chief Justice of any High Court in the country.
