New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday appointed former apex court judge Justice AK Patnaik to hold an inquiry into the allegations of a larger conspiracy to frame Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and fixing of benches in the top court.

The order was pronounced by a Bench of Justices Arun Mishra, Rohinton Nariman, and Deepak Gupta. Justice AK Patnaik (retired) to submit the report in a sealed cover, the court asked.

The apex court also asked the Directors of CBI and IB as well as the Delhi Police Commissioner to cooperate with Justice (Retd) Patnaik as and when sought by him during the inquiry.

Lawyer Utsav Bains had claimed that some sacked court staff had ganged up to target CJI Ranjan Gogoi. He alleged that the allegations of sexual harassment levelled against the CJI was part of a conspiracy.

CJI Ranjan Gogoi has been accused of sexual assault by a former officer who worked as a junior assistant at the Supreme Court between May 2014 and December 2018.
