Former Defence Minister George Fernandes passes away

New Delhi : Former Defence Minister in the Vajpayee Government George Fernandes passed away on Tuesday morning. He was 88.

Fernandes had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. His last stint as a parliamentarian was as a Rajya Sabha MP between August 2009 and July 2010.

The labour leader was first elected to the Lok Sabha in 1967. He had served several times as a Union Cabinet Minister, holding portfolios such as communications, industry, and railways, besides defence.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed sadness on the passing away of former Defence Minister George Fernandes.

In a series of tweets, Mr Modi said, George Sahab represented the best of India’s political leadership.
