New Delhi: Congress President Rahul Gandhi has slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the removal of CBI Director Alok Verma last night, just 48 hours after he was reinstated by the Supreme Court.

Verma was appointed Director General, Fire Services, Civil Defence and Home Guards.

Calling PM Modi a “prisoner of his own lies”, Gandhi said there was fear in Modi’s mind over the alleged corruption in the Rafale fighter jet deal.

The Congress President alleged that PM Modi was afraid of the Rafale deal truth coming out in the open and was having sleepless nights.

Alok Verma was removed as CBI chief in a 2-1 decision by a high-powered committee headed by PM Modi.

The three-member committee also comprises Leader of the Opposition party in Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge and Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi’s nominee, Justice A K Sikri.

Verma was sent on forced leave by the government in a late-night order on 28th October last year in the wake of a feud between him and his deputy Special Director Rakesh Asthana.

Later, Verma challenged the order in the Supreme Court which reinstated him, quashing the government order.
