Election Commission Asks Twitter, FB To Delete Vote Appeals By Congress, BJP

New Delhi: The Election Commission of India has asked Twitter and Facebook to remove all the appeals made by Congress and BJP, urging people to vote for them. The EC has cited the Section 126 of the Representation of the Peoples Act which prohibits candidates and parties from campaigning during the 48-hour silence period before polling in Madhya Pradesh.

However, EC Director General (Communication) Dhirendra Ojha has said that the directive were not given against the backdrop of the vote appeal tweets.

The Congress had released a video footage showing Party Chief Rahul Gandhi urging people to vote for his party. On the other hand, Madhya Pradesh BJP had also retweeted a leader’s tweet asking people to cast their votes in favour of the saffron party.

Notably, Section 126 of the Representation of the People Act (RP Act) prohibits the display of any election matter through Television or any similar medium, 48 hours before the polls. The Election Commission has emphasized that the silence period covers social media too. However, it is still to formulate guidelines in this regards.
