EC Stalls Release Of PM Narendra Modi Biopic Till Completion Of 2019 LS Polls

New Delhi: The Election Commission (EC) on Wednesday stalled the release of PM Narendra Modi biopic till the completion of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

The EC said, “Any biopic that subserves purpose of any political entity or individual should not be displayed in electronic media.”

The EC’s order comes a day before the film, starring Vivek Oberoi, was supposed to hit the theatres on April 11- coinciding with the first phase of the Lok Sabha elections.

On Tuesday, the SC had dismissed a petition filed by a Congress activist seeking a stay on the release of the biopic and said the Election Commission would be an “appropriate” place to seek the redressal.

The apex court said it was not entertaining the petition for the stay on the release of the film as it was “premature” since the movie is yet to be certified by the Censor Board.

In his plea, the Congress activist had asserted that the biopic is being released ahead of the polls to “manipulate, influence and impress viewers and voters.”
